Chemical genetics is the use of synthetic compound in genetic testing or treatments. Using DrugBank,Diethylcarbamazine (DB00711) was found to act on Cytochrome c Oxidase subunit 1.

Diethylcarbamazine (DB00711) as a potent inhibitor of of arachadonic acid metabolism in filarial microfilaria. Therefore, it is used as a anthelmintic treatment as the citrate in the treatment of filariasis, particularly infestations with Wucheria bancrofti or Loa loa.

However, Diethylcarbamazine (DB00711) is specifically designed for bacteria. Cytochrome c Oxidase is located within the mitochondria behind the cell membrane. For use in humans, the crossing of the cell membrane would have to be overcome. Also, Diethylcarbamazine (DB00711) is an inhibitor. Inhibition of the Cytochrome c Oxidase is the cause of SNEM. Therefore the molecule is not a cure rather a research tool.
