Homology

A myriad of online sequencing databases are available to the public in order to find similar sequences in other organisms. These sequencers are available on both the gene sequence and amino acid sequence.

The MT-CO1 gene sequence and Cytochrome c Oxidase Subunit 1 amino acid sequence yielded similar results. The closest organism to the human is the Common/Robust Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). This is unsurprising, however the same 16 other organisms were found in both the gene and protein sequence BLASTS. The similarity in the blast searches in expected because the amino acid sequence is derived from the genetic sequence.

The ClustalW, MUSCLE and T-Coffee alignments all use similar algorithms to determine the sequence similarity. The trees were then created by Phylogeny.fr to visually depict the sequence relationship. The GeneBee was only able to create a a visual tree for the amino acid sequence due to the smaller size when compared to the gene sequence. STRING aligns both the amino acid sequence of the target protein and those proteins that the target interacts with.
